Fish species off limits in Queensland

Fisheries Queensland has issued a reminder to fishos that Barramundi are off limits in the Gulf of Carpentaria until midday January 30, 2012.

The closure is aimed at protecting this treasured species during a delicate time in their lifecycle when they typically aggregate in one area to spawn, making them more vulnerable to predators .

Fisheries Queensland says catch and release fishing for this species during the closure is also prohibited, as the stress of capture may prevent the fish from spawning.

A barramundi closure will also be effective in East Coast waters from midday November 1 to February 1, 2012.

In addition to these barramundi closures, coral reef fin fish will also be off limits during two periods — from October 24 to 28 and November 22 to 26.
