LAKE BOGA BACK ON THE MAP
The Victorian Recreational Fishing peak body, VRFish, said it is elated that water is being directed into Lake Boga, in Northern Victoria.
Lake Boga suffered a major fish-kill in late 2007 when its channelled water supply ceased to flow after its distribution and storage status was changed. This lack of regular water, said VRFish, not only resulted in a major-fish kill but also had a significant negative economic impact on the local communities that rely on income from recreational users.
VRFish chairman Geoff Cramer congratulated the Victorian Government and Goulburn Murray Water for their initiative in filling the lake, and recognising its significant social and economic value to the local community.
VRFish said the new arrangement, with guaranteed a water supply, is great news for the local horticultural sector as well as recreational users, describing it as “a real win-win situation for sustainable resource use.”
“This is great news for all recreational fishers and with the return of good water levels I would encourage Fisheries Victoria to resume stocking Lake Boga with Murray cod and golden perch to create a native fish fishery that we can all enjoy,” added Cramer
