New minimum limits for Qld fish species

Qld anglers are being urged to brush up on their knowledge of fishing rules following recent changes to the minimum size limit of three species.

Fisheries Queensland harvest management general manager, Ian Yarroll, said the minimum size limit for amberjack, samsonfish and mahi mahi had now changed.

“The minimum size limit for all three species will now be 50cm,” Yarroll said.

“The minimum size limit for amberjack and samsonfish has changed from 75cm to 50cm, while mahi mahi has changed from 60cm down to 50cm.

“Changing the size limit for these species will assist industry in terms of profitability while the stocks will remain sustainable.

“The science has shown that amberjack, samsonfish and mahi mahi all reproduce well and grow quickly.

“Amberjack and samsonfish share many biological characteristics and are commonly misidentified. Having the same minimum size limit for both species makes it easier for anglers.

Yarroll said Fisheries Queensland had consulted with representatives from key stakeholder groups including recreational and commercial fishers, charter operators and conservation groups about these changes.
