Teaching young anglers

Aspiring and keen young anglers looking for a bit of excitement and fun during the school holidays can learn more about recreational fishing at two Industry and Investment (I&I) NSW fishing workshops.

The workshops will be held I&I NSW’s Narrandera Fisheries Centre, Buckingbong Road, off the Sturt Highway, from 10am to 3pm, on October 8 and 9, 2009.

I&I NSW Narrandera Fisheries manager, Les Rava, said the workshops would give children between the ages of 8 and 14 the chance to learn about fishing techniques, bag and size limits, as well ass ethical fishing practices.

“Fishing workshops are held around the State as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to teaching children about sustainable recreational fishing and habitat conservation,” said Rava.

“They are a great way to introduce children to this fun and healthy outdoor sport, and the Narrandera Fisheries Centre is the ideal place for children to learn more about freshwater fishing in a safe environment.

“The youngsters will get the chance to put their new skills into action when they fish in a pond specially stocked with freshwater species such as Murray cod, golden perch and silver perch to improve their chances of a good catch.”

The cost of each workshop is $40 per child, and this includes a quality rod and reel, tackle box, shirt, hat and a BBQ lunch. Participants should remember to “slip, slop, slap” and be prepared in the event of inclement weather.

All funds raised by the recreational fishing fee in NSW are placed in two Trusts,

for saltwater and freshwater initiatives. These funds are used to improve

recreational fishing across the State.
