Fish Friendly Farms revitalise Murrumbidgee fish stocks
Beef farmers Chris and Lila Muller will host a Fish Friendly Farms field day at their ‘Parklands’ property, near Wagga Wagga on October 1.
Parklands is one of eight NSW farms that has received funding under the Fish Friendly Farms - Demonstration Farms scheme by Industry & Investment NSW.
Fish Friendly Farms coordinator Charlotte Jenkins, who is a conservation manager with I&I NSW, said funding from the NSW Environmental Trust had allowed these properties to become more “fish friendly” and enhance habitat for native fish.
“The Mullers carried out extensive works on their property including fencing and off-stream water troughs to manage their stock movement near watercourses and re-vegetation of the river banks with native trees and shrubs,” said Jenkins.
“Chris and Lila are inviting other farmers in the area, landcarers and interested local recreational fishers to come and see what they are doing to help improve the health of their local waterways, Tarcutta Creek and the Murrumbidgee River, and in the long term boost native fish numbers.”
Jenkins said the Mullers’ achievements at Parklands were a wonderful example of how property owners can protect and enhance the natural features on their property while ensuring productivity is maintained or improved.
“Over 90 per cent of waterways in NSW run through privately owned land, so it is vital that farmers like the Mullers are aware of the simple steps they can take to ensure the sensitive parts of the landscape such as rivers, creeks and wetlands are healthy and the habitat for native fish is sustained.”
The field day will run from 9am to noon and light refreshments will be provided. Notification of attendance will be appreciated for catering numbers.
To get to Parklands, follow the Sturt Highway from Wagga for approximately 25 km. At the row of poplar trees turn left onto Borambola North Road. Follow this for approximately 1km and Parklands is on the left.
