Ted Hurley Classic Ski Race 2015
Mildura Ski Club president Geoff Thomson recently announced the Ted Hurley Classic had secured Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club as naming rights sponsor for the 2015 ski race.
The Ted Hurley Classic will be held across two days of racing from Saturday, October 17, 2015, until Sunday, October 18. Ted Hurley was a Mildura ski racing icon who contributed to more than 15 years of ski racing with his wife June by his side and son, Glynn, in the observer’s seat.
Born in 1937, Hurley won several major invitational races and events such as Botany Bay, Hawkesbury and the Bill McLachlan race.
Thomson explained race teams in the Classic would sprint from the Wentworth Rowing Club to Apex Park, before swapping skiers and racing back to the start.
“There are two disciplines – expert class using a full length ski and ski rope of any length, and then there are social classes – using a defined-length ski and tow rope,” he said.
“It’s going to test the teams, so they’re going to have to manage their boats and skiers wisely.
“The social classes will be run from Coomealla on Saturday afternoon with veterans, seniors, socials, tadpoles and disabled, but across a shorter, 25km course instead of 200km.”
For spectators, the race is easily accessible, with vantage points in both Mildura and Wentworth.
“The turnaround point at Apex Park is right in Mildura, so spectators can go and have a look without driving 30km up the road, so it’s got a lot going for it for both the competitors and spectators,” Thomson said. Boats will be on display at the Wentworth Junction race HQ across the weekend, while the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club will be the venue for the Show and Shine parade on Friday October 16.
