ROBALO 206 CAYMAN

The Robalo 206 Cayman hails from the same stable that produced the crossover Robalo R227 previously tested by TrailerBoat.

While the R227 unashamedly placed a foot in each camp – fishing and family day boating – the Cayman dispenses with any such concessions and aims to lure in fishermen with its single minded focus.

Although the “bay boat” concept is a relatively new one to Australia, it is a densely populated category in the Americas.

Bay boats are defined by a substantial hull with elevated fore and aft platforms that flank a tall centre console. Deeper and more capable in exposed conditions than a bass boat, they are often called upon to traverse vast distances across open water to access distant creeks and sand flats.

The tall console hints at the stand-up driving position favoured by pilots of this style of craft both for comfort and the ability to read the water ahead.

A lower side profile that doesn’t catch the wind easily when drifting is another key bay boat element as are broad reverse chines to enhance stability at rest.

Rated to 200hp and ready to accept a bow mount trolling motor, the Cayman 206 is a fine example of the breed and on paper at least, ticks all the boxes a tournament bream, bass, barra or squid wrangler could want.

Three plumbed and insulated live wells – standard rear, console and an optional 120lt bow unit – will maintain the catch while numerous dry lockers will swallow any tackle junkie’s entire collection.

Sporting a warped Vee-hull design, the 15° transom deadrise deepens to 19° amidships and should be up for some rather spirited driving. We’ve thrown our hands up for a serious test as soon as Robalo distributor, Chaparral Australia gives us the nod that it’s landed.
