PROPOSED WAKEBOARD CABLE SKI PARK FOR PERTH

New cable ski park in Perth, expected to encourage people to partake in watersports.

The operators of one of Western Australia’s largest waterskiing parks believe a proposed new cable ski park called Perth Wake Park will encourage more people to take up watersports.

“We think it will be a great thing,” Bonney’s WA Water Ski Park manager Tash Johnson told Trade a Boat

. “Anything that gets the young ones into it [watersports] is great.”

Simon and Ben Hurrey made an application for Perth Wake Park to the City of Rockingham in October. The site is an 11.69ha plot at the corner of Mundijong and St Albans roads in Baldivis, around 400m from Bonney’s ski park.

If successful, the cable park would be the first of its kind in WA, since the closure of a similar operation in Spearwood almost a decade ago.

Rather than being daunted by the apparent opposition, Tash Johnson says the operators are focused on the positives, believing the two styles will create numerous mutual benefits.

“Anything recreational like that is great for the area,” she said. “We’re all for it.”

According to the application, the proposed park would spark significant interest in the sport. “It will provide an opportunity for many more people to enjoy towed water sports than currently can,” the application said.

The Perth Wake Park would have three lakes: a 340x120m main lake; a 90x30m lake for beginners; and a 110x30m lake for professionals.

There are currently only four such cable parks in Australia: three in Queensland and one in Penrith, in western Sydney.
