Circumnavigator named Tasmanian of the Year

Rob Pennicott, who raised almost $300,000 in the fight against polio by circumnavigating Australia, has been named the 2012 Tasmanian of the Year.

Rob and his team circled Australia (including Tasmania) anti-clockwise in two 5.4m Naiad rigid inflatables (RIBs), each with twin 60hp Mercury four-stroke engines.

The team faced some atrocious conditions along the way, include winds of up to 70kts at times.

“The Gulf of Carpentaria was the hardest stretch. We spent 26 hours without a stop, getting hit by waves every 12 seconds with fish leaping out of the water hitting us in the head,” Rob said.
