Only in America: the 557hp outboard
TrailerBoat has been contacted over the last few weeks by observant readers seeking further information about a 557hp outboard referred to in our outboard buyers guide, in our previous issue (
Yes, you heard that right — 557hp. Specifically, a 6.2lt, V8, four-stroke outboard from US company Seven Marine. This supercharged, freshwater-cooled monster weighs 454kg and is designed for boats from 8.2m upwards. It has a horizontal crankshaft with two ZF right-angle drives to drive the prop, which is similar to how a sterndrive operates. However, it’s very much an outboard.
Andrew “Engine Man” Norton, who compiled the buyers guide, tells us that production four-stroke outboards go from 2-350hp, with one exception — this one. We’re guessing it’s the sort of engine where if you have to ask about price, you probably shouldn’t be looking.
