A masterful craft

MasterCraft has been very crafty indeed of late, fuelling our interest with seductive titbits of information yet remaining ever so coy about what it had planned for the Surf Expo in Orlando, Florida in September. The MasterCraft team arrived at the show with an ominous, boat-shaped black box which, as it happened, contained the brand new 2012 MasterCraft X-Star.

Eight years after the release of the original X-Star in 2003, MasterCraft says the new incarnation is bigger, beefier and more blinged-up. Stretching to 24ft (7.3m) long and more than 8ft (2.4m) wide, it’s rated to 540hp and comes with an optional Ilmor MV8 7.4lt engine. The boat is equipped with niceties including touch display screens from which all controls are operated and enough seating to accommodate more friends than you’re likely to have, with flip-around options to avoid rubbernecking.

Most importantly, says MasterCraft, the boat puts out a wake to set fear in the heart of men. After a two year consultation process with its team riders, MasterCraft says it has sculpted a wake that is bigger and heavier than the original X-Star, with a new shape to allow for greater lift and potentially bigger tricks. We can’t wait until it hits Aussie shores so we can test it out for ourselves.
