Chaparral Boats has tipped convention on its head in a mission to build it calls “something different”. Rock stars will love it and we wouldn’t mind one either.

The company’s 327 SSX is described as “part performance boat, part family bowrider and part overnight cruiser”, and that, ladies and gentle beans, is a big call. Then again, this boat looks ready to fulfill the promise.

Chaparral says it’s the first bowrider in its class to offer a full beam cabin with overnight accommodation for two, a stand-up head complete with shower, an optional 26in flat-screen TV (the TV isn’t in the shower), and passenger capacity of 20 plus. We have a hard time getting our heads around that last bit — 20 passengers! Blimey! That’s a lot of Pepsi and snag rolls.

Getting to the nearest party won’t be a problem though. The 327 has 600 or 860hp engine options with either twin Mercs or Volvo power, both of which can be ordered with joystick control (come to think of it JOYSTICK would be an apt name for this boat).

The largest bowrider Chaparral has ever made, the luxurious 327 has plenty of niceties that enable one to feel comfortably… satisfied. Even smug.

The Liquid Silver colour scheme is striking. So is a seating arrangement that allows four to sit facing forward at the helm. A “power slide” aft lounge provides more opportunity for well-natured frolicking, and the hull, says, Chaparral, is sculpted in a manner that recalls classic lines from the muscle cars of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Other refinements include handcrafted components, massive storage space (for all those bread rolls), a cockpit wetbar, a custom stereo and bow and cockpit tables.

We like the sound of this and will be very disappointed if Chaparral doesn’t hand one over immediately. For more info on the 327 — named, not incidentally, after a famous V8 engine — visit www.chaparralboats.com.
