Grand Prix Hydroplane testing at Lake Mulwala

Former U.I.M Grand Prix world champion Grant Harrison will tomorrow morning test his 1800hp hydroplane GP1

GP1 is a 510ci (that’s 8357cc!) supercharged Chevrolet-powered hydroplane that consumes over 100lt of methanol in a single four-minute race. Like its competitors, it is capable of reaching speeds of up to 270kmh. Harrison was Australia’s first Grand Prix Hydroplane World Champion when he won in the title in New Zealand in 2004.

Harrison said he is under no illusions about how difficult it will be to recapture the crown, as he will be competing again two former world champions. They include Shamrock, which will be piloted by Paul Cunningham, winner of the 2005 championship; and New Zealander Warwick Lupton with his ride Annihilator, winner of the 2008 title.

The Lake Mulwala Power Festival is now in its fourth year. The event is marketed as a family-friendly watersports weekend that also has numerous land attractions like markets stalls, trade displays for outdoor leisure and boating equipment, and gourmet food facilities and wine tastings.
