Excitement builds for Lake Mulwala Power
Anticipation is building for this year’s Lake Mulwala Power event, due to be held on Lake Mulwala, on the Victorian/New South Wales border, from November 25 to 28. The event continues to go from strength to strength, with a standout attraction this year being the 2010 UIM World Grand Prix Hydroplane Championships.
After months of intense lobbying on the part of Lake Mulwala Power’s organisers, the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) last year deemed the world championship event should go to Lake Mulwala, ahead of other entries from the USA, Canada and New Zealand. Grand prix hydroplanes are capable of incredible speeds of up to 270kmh, and guaranteed to light up Lake Mulwala as teams from as far afield as the US battle for outright supremacy.
International interest in the event has been strong, with several Kiwi teams and one or possibly two US teams intending to make the trek, ensuring the "World Championship" tag is well deserved.
Of course hydroplanes will by no means be the only thing dazzling spectators over the course of the Lake Mulwala Power event. The Australasian Open Unlimited Displacement Championship has also been added to the schedule, pitting teams head to head for the prestigious Marj Watson trophy, backed up by the 6.0lt Displacement Championship.
In addition, Lake Mulwala Power will be catering for all inboard and outboard classes, with just about every class represented across a massive line-up of some 60 race events.
For those looking for a respite from the breakneck speeds attained by these waterborne rockets, there will be plenty of other attractions to entertain the whole family. The classic Australian wooden powerboats will be back again this year, with displays both on the water and on dry land, along with the Syndicate Seacraft Boat Owners Club and their fine old timber vessels, plus a waterski show and a display of dragboats (with the possibility of a drag run, conditions permitting).
That’s in addition to the outdoor trade stalls, markets, and food and wine displays, while — for a different perspective on things — you could always take a helicopter joyflight over picturesque Lake Mulwala and its surrounds.
A fitting close to the weekend will be the Mulwala Water Ski Club Yarrawonga Gold Cup — an event pitting the best hydros against the best displacements and outboards over three thrilling laps, in an epic struggle to claim the coveted Gold Cup title.
