Caves Beach Takes IRB Title (Again)
New South Wales’ Caves Beach Surf Lifesaving Club clinched its eighth straight Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) title at the New South Wales IRB Championships, held recently at Woolgoolga, near Coffs Harbour, on the state’s north coast.
Despite a tough season, the Caves Beach crew pulled out all the stops, powering through the 3ft surf break to defeat Kiama Downs and favourites Thirroul.
The Caves Beach SLC team Captain, Scott Bryant, was thrilled with the win, which followed on from a silver medal at the recent National IRB Championships held at Penguin, in Tasmania. “We’ve been plagued by injury all season and we were labeled as underdogs going into the final event here,” said Bryant. “We proved that champion teams with nothing to lose should never be underestimated, and finished up with the highest aggregate point score ever accrued in the event’s 30-year history,” he added.
Bryant attributed a fair portion of his team’s success to their Mercury SeaPro engine. “The SeaPro is a good, strong engine and exceptionally responsive,” he said. “When the difference between first and last place can be as little as two seconds, immediate performance is key — and the Mercury delivery every time,” he added.
