STUDENT SKIPPERS SHOW LOCAL POLLIES THE ROPES

Marine studies Students from Menai and The Jannali High Schools shared a practical lesson in safe boating yesterday with the Minister for Ports and Waterways, Paul McLeay, along with the Member for Menai, Alison Megarrity.

22 students from years 10 and 11 took part in the boat driver-training day at the Royal Motor Yacht Club, learning how to launch, retrieve and drive a boat, as well as key safety skills such as lifejacket procedures.

“We have magnificent coastal and inland waterways in NSW, especially in The Sutherland Shire region which are there to be enjoyed safely by everyone,” Mr McLeay said.

Megarrity, who is a long time supporter of the local program, said it offered students the opportunity to learn about responsible boating in a safe environment.

“It is great to see so many students embracing their studies, learning essential safe boating skills, and showing their commitment to preserving our beautiful marine environment,” she said.

Mr McLeay added that a NSW Maritime boating safety officer supported Marine Teachers in delivering the training.

“It’s great to see so many young skippers here today, having fun, enjoying our waterways and learning new skills,” he said. “Remember, no matter what age, if you’re the skipper, you’re responsible.”

FURTHER INFORMATION

• The marine studies course incorporates NSW Maritime’s compulsory Boating Safety Course and includes appropriate licence test questions in the assessment stage and a practical component.

• Through this course, Marine studies students can obtain a NSW Maritime licence to drive a powerboat.

• NSW Maritime also supports primary schools around the state with a free Water Safety Activity booklet aimed at primary aged students.
