THIRD STRAIGHT AFC WIN FOR TEAM MERCURY
Team Mercury has achieved what no other AFC (Australian Fishing Championships) team has done before by securing a third straight AFC title. And according to Mercury, they did it the hard way, coming from behind to pull off the competition’s tightest ever victory.
“Going into the final round at Tweed River we knew we had to win and catch a big fish, so we were fishing aggressively from the go and in the end it all paid off,” said team stalwart and bream specialist, Darren “Dizzy” Borg.
A 32cm bream weighing a mere 660g made all the difference by beating the competition’s 540g fish to give Team Mercury the round and the title on count back.
The team took the title while fishing from a Nitro Z7 bass boat powered by a 150hp OptiMax outboard. It was manoeuvred by a MotorGuide Tour Edition electric trolling motor.
“Once again the engines were perfect,” said Borg. “The OptiMax has that great acceleration you need to get to the best fishing spots, and the MotorGuide keeps on going and going,” he said.
Along with Darren Borg, Team Mercury counted fellow veteran Matthew Mott (bass), new comers and barra guns Al McNamara and Matthew Coleman, and AFC regulars Dave Green and Ben Godfrey.
“Ben was the man who pulled in the winning fish and I can tell you we were relieved to see it into the boat,” said Borg, who warned that Team Mercury would be back again.
“It’s a bit hard to stop now, we’re on a roll,” said Borg. “We’ve got a pretty good team at the moment and we know how to work together so yeah, we’ll be back.”
