Lake Mulwala Power 2010 a World Championship event

The world’s peak body representing powerboating, the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), has ruled that the towns of Yarrawonga – Mulwala will host a World Championship boating event in 2010.

The decision to host the 2010 World Grand Prix Hydroplane Championship at the rural towns was announced at last weekend’s UIM General Assembly in Rome. The organisers of the Lake Mulwala Power festival spent six months lobbying the UIM, and the decisions is regarded as a prestigious win for Australian Power Boat Association and the Yarrawonga-Mulwala Tourism team, particularly since the Lake Mulwala Power festival was selected ahead of the US, Canada and New Zealand.

The confirmed dates fall on the consecutive weekends of November 20 to 21, and November 27 to 28, 2010.

Event co-ordinator Barb Macdermid could hardly contain her excitement.

“We are just so excited to have this as part of our Lake Mulwala Power festival for our 2010 event,” she said. “It just goes to show that we are well on the way to making this event the biggest outdoor leisure boating show in Australia!”

Grand Prix Hydroplanes are the world’s fastest automotive circuit race boats, capable of attaining speeds up to 270kph on inland waterways. Teams from the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia are expected to attend.

Meanwhile, the 2009 Lake Mulwala Power festival will run from November 28 to 29.
