MERCURY FOURSTROKE F80 OUTBOARD

Video: Mercury FourStroke F80 Outboard

No fear of the 80hp Mercury FourStroke outboard wearing out

No fear of the 80hp Mercury FourStroke outboard wearing out. Maximum power is developed at only 5000rpm, way lower than the competition. This means the FourStroke Mercury F80 can be propped up without overloading the outboard engine. Available with just the standard gearcase, the 80hp Mercury develops 80.4bhp.

Mounted on a side console Bluefin Barracuda the grunty 80hp Mercury four stroke quickly overcame the stern-heavy nature of this hull to get us planing at less than 3000rpm. As with the Mercury F115 and F90, no prop ventilation occurred in tight turns. Top-end speed and fuel efficiency was pretty damned good too.

Even with the helm and passenger seats just ahead of the transom we could talk quietly at the helm, so no tinnitus with this outboard motor. And providing the antiventilation plate was kept immersed the Mercury FourStroke 80 had no trouble backing us off sandbars, which the Gold Coast Broadwater is full of!

Videos: Mercury FourStroke outboard motors

We spent a couple of days reviewing new engines in the new Mercury FourStroke outboard motor range. As you can see, our video crew was kept very busy, as was engine expert Andrew "Engine Man" Norton and senior boat tester, John "Bear" Willis. Here's what they had to say.

Mercury F90 FourStroke outboard

Loads of low-down grunt and efficient running made the F90 FourStroke Andrew “Engine Man” Norton’s pick of the lot.

The F115 is quieter than its predecessors due to decreased load on the engine. It also planed faster when fitted with a new Command Thrust gearcase.

The new FourStroke range isn’t just about engines. Mercury also redesigned its engine gearboxes to reduce drag and increase overall performance.

What else is new?

Mercury Australia’s Anthony Brown explains what else is new, from significant engine weight savings to the SmartStart system that won’t wreck the starter motor.
