E.C. GRIFFITH CUP TO RUN OVER ANZAC DAY WEEKEND
The 100th E.C. Griffith Cup — billed by the organisers as “the place to be to see the world’s fastest powerboats reaching speeds up to 270kmh” — will be held over the ANZAC Day weekend at Pykes Creek Reservoir in Victoria, halfway between Ballarat and Melbourne.
Hosted by the Melbourne Runabout Speedboat Club, the event will see grand prix hydroplanes and blown alcohol displacement craft compete for what organisers say is the oldest international motor sport trophy in the southern hemisphere. The competition class is the Australasian Unlimited Unrestricted Open Inboard Championship (there’s a mouthful) and attracts racers from across Australia and New Zealand, with the winning country having the right to host the event.
In addition to professional powerboat racing, other events include Formula Future junior boat racing; on-shore entertainment including a static boat show of new-model skiboats and accessories; pontoon and fishing boats displays; trade displays; and stalls for wine tastings and local produce. The kids will also be kept busy with amusement rides and food stalls and refreshments.
The weekend starts with practice and free entry on the Friday, followed by a welcome party at the MRSBC club rooms, where past winners and champions will be interviewed alongside today’s competitors.
This year’s E.C. Griffith Cup opens at Pykes Creek at 9am, on Saturday, April 27. Presentations and the closing ceremony will take place at 6pm on the Sunday evening.
