NEW YACHTS — Catalina 315 and 385

Catalina 315 and 385 Review

Sanctuary Cove-based Ausail Marine Group (AMG) is displaying two new keelboats from America’s Catalina Yachts — a C315 from its Cruiser Series and the C385, the entry-level model of its Ocean Series range — at next month’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show 2012.

According to the dealership, the new Catalina 315 raises the yacht brand to a higher level of performance, finish and engineering achievement, with all the style, refinement and the best elements of the larger Catalina 5 Series boats.

With core attributes of the award-winning 445 and 355, the 315, we’re told, includes features that are not found in many of the world’s yachts, yet come standard with the Catalina 5 Series. These include: a watertight StrikeZone collision bulkhead; the SecureSocket mast support system that affords “superior load resolution and watertight integrity”; the DeepDefense rudder system for “failsafe” steering; and the T-Beam MastStep structure that has “all the benefits of a deck-stepped mast and the strength of a keel-stepped mast”.

“You’ll find a bold emphasis on strength, lead keels, sleek low-profile cabin design, ergonomically correct cockpits that are optimised for efficiency, with great visibility from the helm. Plus, all the classic warmth and ambience that only a teak interior creates,” added AMG.

Lead keels, long travellers for precise sail control, and lengthy inboard genoa tracks so the sail plan is balanced in all wind conditions, are just a few of the many design features AMG tells us that sets the new Catalina 385 apart from other yachts.

The C385 also includes new 5 Series features, such as a watertight StrikeZone collision bulkhead aft of the anchor locker. “A new backstay system creates an impressive cockpit for the avid sailor, and Catalina’s unique SecureSocket chainplates mast support system affords superior load resolution,” explained the local agent.

The latest in the line of new Catalinas that evolved from successful design features and proportions of previous models, the 385’s moderate beam is carried well aft for a spacious cockpit. The modest freeboard reduces windage and a beautiful hand-finished teak interior creates classic warmth and styling.
