MARINAS - Wyndham Harbour vision takes shape

After 25 years in the making, site-clearing works will commence at Melbourne’s newest marina and residential community, Wyndham Harbour, in preparation for Stage 1 construction in early 2011.

BMD Constructions is undertaking the site-clearing works and commenced on November 30. Works will include demolishing buildings and clearing pine trees and other non-native vegetation.

Wyndham Harbour development director, Sonya Miller is excited about commencement of the site-clearing works.
“2010 has been a big year for Wyndham Harbour, with a highly successful sales campaign and the commencement of site works marking a significant step forward for the project,” she said.

“It so exciting that after a seven-year planning and approvals process we will finally see a vision created over 25 years come to fruition.

“We look forward to the beginning of the site clearing and preparation this year followed by Stage 1 earth works in January 2011,” said Miller.

Once complete, the $440 million Wyndham Harbour marina development is said to become a major boating and lifestyle destination. The world-class development will be the only safe boat harbour between Williamstown and Geelong. It will feature up to 1000 wet berths and dry-boat storage for up to 390 boats — making it the largest marina in Victoria and the second largest in the country.

Developers said local residents will benefit from this landmark development with improved community amenities and an increase in tourism to provide a boost to the local economy and labour market.

It is estimated that Wyndham Harbour will bring in more than 72,000 visitors per annum, in turn generating approximately $6.2m of direct tourism expenditure and injecting into approx $11m to the local economy.

The Marina Square, located at the heart of the development, is predicted to become a vibrant meeting place for the community with a range of shops, restaurants and cafes overlooking the marina.

There will be a range of new walking and bike paths, parklands, wetlands and beaches, as well as upgrades to the Werribee South boat ramp and Duncans Road.

Melbourne’s Liberman Family purchased the site more than years ago and has undergone a lengthy planning and approvals process to deliver this much-needed and long-anticipated project.

Developers said sales for the development have been extremely strong with Stage 1 and 2 land releases and the apartment product completely sold out. Stage 3 land is reportedly now more than 90% sold and long-term marina berths are said to be selling fast.
