News - Clock Ticking For NSW Maritime Hero Nominations
There are just a few hours left to nominate someone for a 2010 NSW Maritime Medal.
“With nominations closing this Friday, August 20, it’s now time to choose who you think has made an outstanding and sustained contribution to the NSW boating and the marine world,” said NSW Ports and Waterways Minister, Paul McLeay.
“Past winners have been many and diverse, but they have one thing in common. All have made an invaluable contribution to our State’s magnificent waterways — be it through promoting boating safety, enhancing the marine environment or supporting the boating community.
“Volunteer lifeboat coxswain Michael Stringer, one of last year’s community medal winners, dedicated over 45,000 unpaid hours to keeping the harbour safe for Sydney families. He’d been involved in more than 900 rescue operations.
“Other recipients have included Marine Rescue NSW members who work tirelessly to keep our waterways safe, as well as volunteers at aquatic events and supporters of the Sydney Heritage Fleet.
“It is important to reward the valuable contribution people like Michael make, not just to the marine community, but also the wider community at large.
“With more and more NSW families getting out on the water it’s especially important these unsung heroes get the recognition they deserve,” said McLeay.
Nominations for the 2010 NSW Maritime Medal close at 5pm this Friday, August 20.
