2024 Offshore Superboat season kicks off this month

Free events are hard to come by these days, but the Offshore Superboat Championships hosted by the Australian Offshore Powerboat Club offers just that, over four exciting and packed rounds throughout the year.

The season opener event (Round 1) kicks off in Victoria later this month. On the weekend of 24–25 February 2024 at Wyndham Harbour Marina in the western suburbs of Melbourne, the area is set to come to life as some of the fastest powerboats around battle it out in stunning summer weather.

This first round weekend will consist of six races — three Sport 65 and 85 races and three Offshore Superboat races, with special presentations at 3.30pm on the Sunday (25 February).

The Offshore Superboat Championships first started in 1969 and is an annual event that’s run since (bar a few interruptions from COVID). Over the years it has evolved to become a multi-round renowned sporting event that is highly anticipated by boat lovers each year.

Following this first round in Melbourne, there is a second round in Geelong on 16–17 March, a third round in Hervey Bay, Queensland, on 11–12 May and a fourth and final round also in the Sunshine State (Gold Coast) on 27–28 July.

With competitive racing across multiple classes including open and closed cockpits, the Superboat deliver speed, action and fun for all. Each event will offer multiple locations for free access for shoreline viewing or spectators and also unparalleled pit access to view the Superboats and meet the drivers and support crews.

There’s no need to organise tickets as viewing is free, but it’s a good idea to get there as early as possible to secure a good seat for the exhilarating journey. The racing kicks off at 1pm on Saturday, 24 February, and 11am on Sunday, 25 February, so you have plenty of time to get organised in the morning before the fierce competition begins.

It’s a great day by the water witnessing some incredible offshore races, so pack your picnic blanket, favourite snacks and plenty of sunscreen, round up the entire family and get excited to test your adrenaline levels.
