Million Dollar Fish competition kicks off in Northern Territory

Join the excitement of Million Dollar Fish in NT, with Season 9 running from 1 October 2023 to 31 March 2024.

The Northern Territory’s Million Dollar Fish (MDF) competition began on Sunday 1 October 2023 offering not one, but two, barramundi worth a million dollars to be caught by lucky fishos.

These two fish have joined the nine tagged million-dollar fish from the previous season. This means there are now a total of 11 million-dollar barra swimming in the Territory’s pristine waterways to be caught in Australia’s richest fishing competition, which is underwritten by SportsBet.

Competition organiser Northern Territory Major Events Company (NTMEC) has confirmed a winner will take home a million dollars during Season 9, so there’s never been a better time to book a trip to the Northern Territory’s Top End and wet a line.

As well as the fish carrying million-dollar red tags, 100 barramundi sporting a $10,000 tag have also been released across the Top End’s fishing regions of Darwin, Katherine, Kakadu, Arnhem Land and the Tiwi Islands. The Northern Territory has some of the best fishing in the country with anglers able to fish creeks, billabongs, rivers and the blue water.

Since MDF began in 2015, $925,000 has been paid out to anglers who have hooked a red-tagged barra, but the million-dollar barra has never been reeled in.

MDF is delivered by NTMEC on behalf of the Northern Territory Government and CEO Suzana Bishop expects record-breaking registrations for the biggest prize pool yet.

“We saw record registrations for Season 8, and the most fish caught (20) but with enthusiasm for Season 9 so high, thanks to the promise the million will go off, it looks set to be even bigger,” Mrs Bishop said. “Close to 17,000 eager anglers have already registered for free, and many are from interstate, which is great news for the Territory as they head here to enjoy the holiday of a lifetime.”

About Million Dollar Fish

The Million Dollar Fish competition was introduced in 2015 to lure anglers to fish the Northern Territory’s pristine waterways. Underwritten by SportsBet, it is Australia’s richest fishing competition.

Million Dollar Fish sees a number of tagged barramundi released across the Territory’s five main fishing regions (Arnhem Land, Darwin, Kakadu, Katherine and the Tiwi Islands). Season 9, which runs from 1 October 2023 to 31 March 2024, will feature 100 barra tagged $10,000 and two tagged a million dollars.

All the tagged $1 million fish from previous seasons remain active year-round, while the other tagged fish are only active during the official Million Dollar Fish season. Once a $1 million prize-tagged fish is caught, the others turn into $10,000 fish, unless it is outside the official season, in which case the other fish cease to be active.

Since the competition launched, $925,000 has been paid out to lucky fishos from around Australia who have cashed in by reeling in a prize-tagged barramundi. Hundreds more lucky anglers have won epic prizes from competition partners through the Lucky Prize Pool.
