New Aussie Sailing-Focused Cookbook Release

A newly released book with over 260 pages, filled with recipes and advice about living a nautical lifestyle.

More and more people are searching for alternative life adventures, particularly now that we are all free of COVID-19 restrains. And sailing has attracted many.

The newly released book The Hunter & The Gatherer

by Catherine Lawson and David Bristow is the culmination of the couple’s life sailing with their daughter Maya. With over 260 pages, 160 of which are dedicated to recipes shared by the family’s nautical lifestyle, and more than 60 pages of provisioning advice, this book is a wonderful companion for any sailor — whether you’re experienced or dreaming of a new horizon — who wants to know more about food preparation and planning.

“We call these recipes faraway food and create them for people who love to eat well but love to escape more,” Catherine says.

“This is a book for ocean-loving foodies striving for better health, greater self-sufficiency and a tiny footprint on the sea: sailors and boaties, anglers and divers, snorkelers and surfers, and everyone whose best adventure ends with feet dug into the sand, watching the sunset with good mates and great food,” Catherine continues.

“The food we cook in this book is the food we catch. Not every day on the sea brings in a fish, but we might harvest oysters instead, find a nice, fat mud crab, or forage for coconuts to crack. Some of our vegetables are boat-grown, and others are market bought or traded off the back of our yacht. We sprout seeds, grains and pulses to produce the healthiest, most sustainable menus imaginable in the most remote and beautiful locations we can reach.”

There are four sections to The Hunter & The Gatherer, with plenty of notes on provisioning your boat and preparing your galley, advice on seasickness, handy advice on the mishaps you might encounter during sailing life and how to stretch your supplies when you’re far from land.

The recipes are slotted into three of those four sections. ‘Food for Hunters’ covers the best seafood recipes that Catherine and David have produced, plus expert notes on how to catch the seafood you’ll need. ‘Food for Gatherers’ is a compilation of vegetable-forward dishes using a wide variety of ingredients you’ll find around the world. Last but not least, ‘Sweet Treats’ covers all the foods that get sailors through long, overnight passages or are perfect additions to celebrations of relaxing afternoons.

The Hunter & The Gatherer will be available for purchase on 1 May and can be ordered from most bookstores or online at Exploring Eden Books for RRP $49.95. For every copy of this book that is sold, one tree is planted to help in the effort to make sure these books do more good than harm.
