Review: Excess 14 Catamaran

Excess Catamarans proudly announced the launch of its newest and brightest cruising yacht, the Excess 14, at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2022.

The Excess 14 catamaran has been designed as a pure incarnation of the Excess brand – offering an innovative architecture, a sleek, playful design, and a layout that has never been seen before on the market, both in the owner and charter versions.

Delivering an instantly recognisable design, the Excess 14 features a low boom, reduced windage due to the lower freeboard, taut lines, and redesigned hull windows, all of which work together to create the distinctive look of this catamaran.

An aft-set coachroof, forward-stepped mast, and composite bowsprit are standard to the brand’s innovative designs, while the inverted and inclined bows add an extra layer of fun to this model’s design. The exterior design finishes off with a non-immersed forefront, establishing a dynamic catamaran that’s ready for adventure.

Inspired by monohulls, the Excess 14 features helm stations right at the stern to ensure direct contact with the rudders and a good view of the sails. Visibility is optimal onboard this model, through the inclusion of untinted windows – making this an exclusive on the market. Optimised fins design, and extended rudder blades can also be enjoyed. A direct steering system was chosen, incorporating textile lines for a better helm feel.

The benefits of a collaboration with VPLP design can be seen throughout the Excess 14, its lines clearly reflecting an understanding of ocean racing. Enriched by their expertise and cutting-edge software, this model is designed with a forward-set rig, a square-top mainsail, and a large overlapping genoa, as standard, to optimise the sail area-to-displacement ratio. An increase to the bridgedeck clearance establishes better passage through the water, and an asymmetrical hull design reduces interference drag. Other innovative changes include a lower centre of gravity, an optimised structure (foam sandwich, carbon reinforcements, etc.) and new longitudinal volume distribution.

A spacious headroom offers a warm and bright as ever interior design, with wide, comfortable beds, and bathrooms featuring separate showers. Large and subdivided storage spaces have been created in anticipation for all sailing adventures. Demonstrating that there is no compromise between sailing and living spaces, an ingenious retractable chart table is included.

Excess 14

An unseen before layout, both in owner and charter versions, solidifies the exclusivity of this model. Available in several layout versions, the Excess 14 three-cabin version features a central bathroom, a private dressing area, and the option of extra bunks to fit the whole family. The four-cabin version includes four cabins, four heads, and four separate showers, an optional skipper cabin in each hull, and the option of including a skylounge on the coachroof – a design with no compromise to the look or sensations of the model. The Excess 14 also offers an option with a crew cabin in each forepeak.
