Interview with Captain Tim Dean about Anti-Roll Gyros (ARG)

Gyro Stabilisers are no longer a luxury, they’re a must-have item for safe and comfortable boating experience.

We had a chat with Captain Tim Dean, owner of a 47' O'brien Sportsfisher, about gyros and why he chose the ARG stabiliser. Tim owns Calypso Fishing Adventures and arranges deep sea marlin fishing charters anywhere along the east coast of Australia.

Staff: Tell us a little about yourself, what you do and the challenges you face.

Tim Dean: I’ve been running fishing charters all along the east Australian coastline for the past 30 years, from the giant black marlin off Cairns to the blue marlin, black marlin and striped marlin in Port Stephens.

I've fished all over the world and had the pleasure of running some very fine vessels in all weathers. Nothing compares to the Great Barrier Reef where we fish for the biggest fish that swim, and do it in some of the roughest weather anyone could ever fish.

Staff: What research did you do into stabilisers?

Tim Dean: In recent years gyro stabilisers started to make their way into the fleet, with several vessels a year making the investment.

Tall tales of performance are told, along with disastrous breakdowns and loads of downtime: the Barrier Reef will expose your weakest link and send you home packing.

One thing I did note through the peaks and troughs of reliability with other brands of gyros was when they were working it was a whole new world of comfort and safety. I was intrigued.

After several years of watching, learning, long discussions and research, I settled on ARG.

Staff: Can you tell us why you picked the ARG stabiliser?

Tim Dean: Loads of information, but in the end it came down to a couple of key factors.

If your gyro performs on the Great Barrier Reef, it’s solid!

The ARG has the fewest external moving parts - the bits that go bang. They are air-cooled; too much aeration when fighting fish in rough water does not suit water-cooled gyros.

Easy installation, designed for commercial application and unmatched warranty and backup service were important too.

Staff: Can you give us some feedback of your experience with the stabiliser?

Tim Dean: It has changed my life, literally. It performs above all my expectations.

Now we can fish harder, longer and in even rougher weather than we ever thought possible. We can enjoy remote out-of-the-way anchorages never attempted without a gyro.

I can't believe I went all those years without one.

Staff: How do you use your gyro?

Tim Dean: I just start the genset and push one button - and there is only one button. Thirty minutes later we’re steady as a rock. You don't hear it running either, like other brands with hydraulics. It's silent.

Staff: How likely are you to recommend ARG Stabilisers?

Tim Dean: I urge everyone I know, and anyone who asks me, they have to try it out.

I wished I'd installed a gyro sooner, but I may have not ended up with the ARG if I did, so for that fact alone, I’m satisfied I waited.

Staff: Thanks for taking the time to talk to us.

Tim Dean: No worries - it’s been a pleasure.
