Fleming 85

Fleming's new 85 is a study in tasteful design with a classic nautical sensibility and the best of modern construction methods.

Fleming make some nice boats, don't they? Fleming's 85 is a 'brand new design from the keel up' that still has that classic Fleming style, and that's exactly what we love about it.

Technologically, the Fleming 85 has come a long way from the downeast lobster boats from which it borrows nautical styling. The hull design comes from naval architects Norman R Wrights and Sons and has been refined using Computational Fluid Dynamics software to produce the most efficient, smooth handling tub to date. Modern composites provide the kind robust construction you'd expect from a classic lobster boat, but at a fraction of the weight of traditional methods.

To suit a range of long-haul voyagers, the multi-level layout is available with either an open flybridge or enclosed pilothouse. The former provides additional outdoor space for lounging on a summer's day, while the latter provides more entertaining space below by relocating all the helm equipment upstairs.

As far as deck-space is concerned, the 85 has everything covered. First up, there are multiple options for boarding, via the swim platform or side boarding gates. From there, the first stop is a well equipped aft deck that facilitates seated dining for 10 people, and also houses a gull-wing door that leads to the engine room (which houses twin MAN V12 1550hp engines) and crew quarters. The foredeck, accessed via a Portuguese bridge, has a tidy set of anchor gear, huge storage lockers and a fold-up seating alcove. And regardless of whether the open or closed upper deck options are selected, the flybridge deck has space to house a 17-foot tender and crane.

The stunning interiors have a classic nautical feel thanks to their ample teak and blonde wood panelling, while cream leather upholstery and subtle finishes create a more modern feel. There are three- and four-cabin accommodation options, as well as twin or single crew cabin options, both of which come with a crew galley.

All this beauty, however, won't come cheap. While we've yet to discover exactly how much the Fleming 85 will cost once converted to AUD, you can be sure it'll be up there in the many millions. But it's entirely justified, as far as we're concerned, because Fleming really do make some of the best.
