Sealegs 6.1m Alloy
Say goodbye to boat ramps and hello to a more fulfilled life
Ever since we saw a Sealegs boat drive itself off a trailer during setup at SCIBS, we've had a soft spot for these go-anywhere vessels. The trouble has always been that they're so prohibitively expensive, they seemed like little more than a billionaire's plaything or military vessel. It seems like a cruel twist of evolution that it advanced us beyond amphibious stages and confined humanity to but one terrain.
Those days of lamenting over fate's decision to curse us with singular-use vehicles, however, are coming to an end.
Sealegs have unveiled their most affordable vehicle to date — a 6.1m amphibious alloy fishing boat that's priced from $149,000 (which includes the base 130hp outboard engine). That's not a small figure by any means, but it is a figure that you could justify to yourself if you really wanted to.
Think about how much better your weekends would be if you could simply drive down the beach and into the water without having to line up at the boat ramp with all the tinny towing schmucks. Imagine the sense of freedom that comes with the ability to drop the wheels and pull up onto a remote stretch of land whenever the feeling takes hold. Try as you might, you're not going to be able to convince us that life wouldn't be better with a Sealegs.
It all counts for naut, however, if it's not fit for its purpose as a fishing boat. At first glance, however, it does look like a perfect platform from which to wet a line or two. There's an open, spacious aft deck, seating for four, a bundle of rod holders, bait board, tanks and all the other necessities. Plus it can be optioned up with a targa arch and a variety of other comforts. There are also optional technology upgrades, including power steering, all-wheel drive and extended run time.
Sealegs CEO David McKee Wright hits the nail on the head, saying, “The 6.1m Alloy presents a highly practical amphibious fishing solution for those who those who no longer have the time, inclination, or ability for traditional trailer boat launching. This craft will allow more owners the freedom to go boating on their own terms, and initial sales indicate it has struck a chord with many."
Freedom, isn't that why you buy a boat in the first place?
