Review: Streaker 6100 Sirocco Fibreglass Bowrider

A little over five years ago I had the privilege to drive my first Streaker Sirocco 6100 bowrider. I was quite thrilled that a favourite local manufacturer was taking on the influx of American bowriders flooding the market – aided then by the exchange rate. Thankfully patriotic Aussies still favour local production and we have a special love of outboard engines. Most of the American market is structured around stern-drive technology, so the outboard-powered Streaker Sirocco was on the money back then and even more so today.

In those five years engine technology has moved on by leaps and bounds, with two and four-stroke offerings exceptionally gutsy and efficient. I drove that original Sirocco 6100 with a direct-injected Yamaha VMAX 200 and loved it. However, our latest version was fitted with the trick new Yamaha 200hp four-cylinder lightweight four-stroke outboard motor.

Streaker Sirocco

Outside, the Streaker Sirocco hasn’t changed that much – and why should it? The hull is basically the same as the Savage family has been producing at Streaker Boats for more than 30 years. When you’re on a good thing stick to it, eh! The 6100 is a dependable hull that not only provides a great base for this speedy sportster but has excellent rough water credentials to boot.

The bowrider layout is particularly appealing as a family all-rounder but its unique and snazzy lines and inviting internal space bring on a party atmosphere on the water for young and old. It’s as good for social wakeboarding as for a serious fishing sojourn, then off up to a snazzy waterside restaurant in an up-market metro destination.

What’s new on the Streaker Sirocco 6100?

Our review boat was one of the first of the new production run and it’s been finished with some tasteful subtleties.

The immediate sense is a general softening of the overall presence, away from the rather strong contrasts of the flashy two-tone hull. The new decals lend the timeless hull a very contemporary appeal, while the new upholstery finishes beckon you to come in and relax, off-white leatherette replacing the rather harsh polar whites of the past.

Premium bolster-style pedestal seating has replaced the basic shells and there are new carbon fibre-look offsets in the thickly padded panels. I was never a huge fan of the previous trend for black gelcoat dashboards, though I recognise the intent was to reduce glare. Still, the new dash looks much cleaner with white gelcoat and minimal black inlays as instrument backing, all highlighted by a very sporting steering wheel.

Whilst Streaker’s past presentation stood the test of time with terrific manufacturing quality, it’s now following international trends and replacing every stick of timber in the hulls with non-rotting hi-tech composites. The internal structure has also been updated to keep pace with Australian standards. This ensures every Streaker is built for a lifetime of service.

Layout and design

Nothing beats the appearance and performance of a good deep-V with a flared bow, and the triple strakes highlight the strong sheer lines and chines. Twin boarding platforms flank a well-designed walk-up transom with a moulded engine well. The comfortable rear lounge is enormously practical for all sporting pursuits and you can simply leave it at home if you’re off on a half-serious fishing trip, creating a walk-up transom.

Handling and ride

I’ve always loved the instant and continuous flow of power provided by direct-injection two-strokes but I’m happy to admit yet again that I simply love the new Yamaha 200hp lightweight four-cylinder four-stroke. We had the same engine fitted to our Haines V19R project boat and it never missed a beat, supplying smooth and quiet performance with a power band that just keeps on accelerating throughout the rev range, without any traditional four-stroke lag.

The 200hp Yamaha outboard motor completes a terrific combination on a boat such as the Streaker Sirocco 6100, not only for its sports performance but also a huge difference in passenger comfort in a cruising environment – you can barely hear the engine. In fact, at low speed the sound of the water stream is often louder than the engine. When we opened her up, we achieved a higher top speed of 84km/h at 5900rpm, with the Yamaha SDS S/Steel Reliance 18in propeller, and used around 75L/h.
